What is Accelerated TMS?

Accelerated TMS condenses a six to eight-week TMS course into a short, intensive schedule. It can be delivered in five consecutive days or in a single day, involving multiple short sessions each day, separated by brief rest periods. Accelerated TMS implements the same non-invasive magnetic stimulation equipment used in standard TMS, but uses a different stimulation technique known as intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) for increased efficiency.

There’s no anesthesia and no recovery time; most people return to normal activities after each day.

  • Live with depression that hasn’t fully responded to therapy and/or medications.

  • Want results in days, not weeks, or have limited time for a 6–8 week daily schedule.

  • Prefer a non‑drug approach without anesthesia or downtime.

Who Can It Help

You might consider accelerated TMS if you:

Insurance: Accelerated protocols (1‑day or 5‑day) are generally not covered; standard TMS often is when criteria are met.

5‑Day Accelerated TMS

  • What's included:

50 sessions across one week. Includes evaluation, daily mapping/adjustments as needed, and follow‑up planning.

1‑Day Accelerated TMS

  • What's included:

An intensive single‑day block with multiple short sessions and breaks. Ideal for a rapid start, tight schedules, or to experience accelerated TMS before committing to the full week.

Structured daily rhythm with consistent breaks

Accelerated TMS is well‑tolerated for most people. Common temporary effects include scalp sensitivity or mild headache, which typically occur earlier on. We adjust settings for comfort and review rare risks and safety screening before you begin and throughout treatment.

Safety & Side Effects

  • How is accelerated different from standard TMS?

Same technology, faster schedule. Standard TMS is one session/day for 6–8 weeks; accelerated TMS compresses many short sessions into fewer days.

  • How soon might I feel better?

The timeline for 5-day and 1-day accelerated protocols can vary. For the 5-day accelerated schedule, some people notice changes during the week; many assess the full benefit in the days to weeks after finishing.

Response patterns to 1-day protocols resemble those of standard TMS (see our Standard TMS page), such that symptoms may begin to alleviate a few weeks into treatment, but their full effect often takes place following 6 weeks of sessions, or in the case of the 1-day protocol, up to six weeks after the single session. There remains ongoing research for the 1-day to gain a deeper understanding of the response pattern.

  • Can I work or drive during the program?

Yes. There’s no anesthesia and no downtime; many return to normal activities between or after sessions.

  • Is the 1‑day option a full course?

Yes. It’s an intensive block that can stand alone for some or serve as a starter before the 5‑day plan. Together, we can decide what suits your needs best.

  • Is Accelerated TMS covered by insurance?

Accelerated protocols are generally not covered. Standard TMS often is when criteria are met; we’ll explain both paths.

  • Can I stay on my current meds/therapy?

Often, yes. Before beginning a TMS protocol, we coordinate with you on whether it is suitable to continue, adjust, or simplify your existing treatment with us or your existing healthcare provider. Read more: Medication Management at Redbud
