What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy (“talk therapy”) is a structured conversation with a trained clinician to understand your background, experiences, and symptoms to embark on a journey of recovery and improved quality of life. Rebud draws from Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) to provide an emotion-focused intervention.

Therapy can be effective for depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma-related concerns (e.g., PTSD), bipolar depression, grief, relationship stress, ADHD-related challenges, and more. Together, we’ll create a plan that fits your life.

Who Can Therapy Help

  • Our approach: ISTDP

Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) is a time-efficient, emotion-centred psychotherapy which draws on psychodynamic therapy principles. It focuses on uncovering deep-seated emotions that can cause disturbances in emotional well-being or daily life.

Psychotherapy sessions are often covered by insurance (a diagnosis is typically required). We’ll verify your benefits, outline copay/coinsurance, and provide transparent self-pay options if needed.

Initial Visit

We identify the internal emotional problem that you want to work on together, and start to help you pay attention to your emotions and notice any anxiety or habits of emotional avoidance that arise when you start to focus on your genuine feelings.

Experiencing Emotions & Listening to Your Body

During sessions, you will be actively experiencing emotions and learning how you respond to and experience your emotions.

Physical cues in the body can tell us a lot about your feelings; by understanding how certain emotions affect your body (eg, racing heartbeat, trembling, muscle tension), we can identify triggers or uncover inner conflicts.

Target the “Stuck Points”

Identifying your physical cues and exploring inner conflicts is the key to disarming your brain’s defence mechanisms that may be causing difficulties in your daily activities, work, or relationships.

  • Medication management - medication can be used to reduce symptom barriers that make therapy harder.

  • TMS therapy - non-drug neuromodulation that can provide relief from depressive and OCD symptoms.

  • Spravato (esketamine) - in-clinic nasal-spray treatment paired with an oral antidepressant for rapid relief from depressive symptoms.

We’ll help you compare options and choose the right combination for your goals.

Therapy + Other Treatments

  • How is psychotherapy different from medication or TMS?

Through therapy, one can gain a deeper understanding of one's true internal emotional experience and how their life experiences have shaped habits of emotional avoidance and use this understanding to overcome difficulties in thought patterns, behavioral tendencies, and improve emotional well-being.

Medication or TMS has a more direct biological effect, targeting certain neural circuits (see TMS) or neurotransmitter systems (eg, SSRIs).

  • How long are sessions, and how often will I come?

Typically 50–60 minutes, weekly or biweekly, adjusted to your needs and progress.

  • How long until I notice changes?

It varies, but many people start to see shifts as emotional avoidance drops and they practice new responses between sessions.

  • Do I need to choose therapy or TMS/Spravato?

Not necessarily. We’ll review pros/cons and can combine therapies when that’s most likely to help you reach your goals.
