What is Spravato Esketamine?

Spravato is a nasal-spray form of esketamine, a ketamine derivative used in-clinic for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It’s self-administered under clinical supervision and works on the brain’s glutamate system involved in mood and neuroplasticity, which helps explain its rapid antidepressant effects for many people.

You might be a candidate if you’re an adult with treatment-resistant depression (typically after trying two or more antidepressants without experiencing the desired outcomes). Spravato is often used alongside an oral antidepressant as part of its labeled use. We’ll review your history, current meds, and goals together to design a program best suited for you.

Who Spravato May Help

Many insurers cover Spravato for treatment-resistant depression when the criteria are met. We’ll check your benefits, explain any out-of-pocket costs, and manage prior authorization. If you have a high deductible or prefer self-pay, we can discuss financing options and alternatives.

Your Sessions & Schedule

Spravato is given in-clinic, following a structured schedule (often twice weekly for 4 weeks, then weekly as symptoms improve; maintenance is individualized). You self-administer the nasal spray under supervision in a comfortable treatment room.

Monitoring & After-Visit Plan

Expect a 2-hour observation period after each dose. Common short-term effects include temporary dissociation, dizziness, drowsiness/fatigue; you’ll need a ride home and should not drive until the next day. We’ll check in regularly and coordinate with your ongoing care.

Spravato (esketamine) and ketamine are related but not the same treatment: ketamine is typically delivered IV and isn’t FDA-approved for depression, while esketamine is FDA-approved and can be delivered intranasally under a clinic program with required monitoring. Compare Treatments

Most people tolerate Spravato well. Temporary effects can include dissociation, changes in blood pressure, nausea, dizziness, and sleepiness, usually beginning within 40 minutes and easing in 2 - 4 hours; fewer than 7% discontinue due to side effects in long-term studies. You’ll be monitored on-site each visit for safety.

Safety & Side Effects

  • How fast might I feel better?

Some people notice changes within hours to days; others build benefit over the first 4 - 8 weeks as sessions continue. We’ll track progress and tailor frequency.

  • Will I stay on my current meds/therapy?

Often yes. Spravato is typically paired with an oral antidepressant, and we’ll coordinate with your prescribers/therapist.

  • Can I drive after treatment?

No. Plan for a ride home and a restful evening; most people resume normal activities the next day.

  • Is this the same as TMS?

No, Spravato is a medication delivered intranasally; TMS is non-drug neurostimulation. We offer both and can help you compare. Read more: TMS Therapy
